1v1 · 2v2 · first to 11

The table tennis table finally keeps score.

Singles or doubles, the serve is drawn before the first point and the score is tapped in game by game. The room ranking follows, and the history stays.

In play

Game by game, serve included.

Table tennis does not fit in a single score: every game has its own, and the match is won in a best of three or five. Ryvaals keeps each game separately, follows the serve as it changes ends every two points, and only closes a game once the two-point gap is there.

Why it works

Three reasons to keep score.

  • 01

    Games come thick and fast

A game takes a few minutes, so the ranking gets fed quickly. This is the sport where Elo settles the earliest.

  • 02

    Doubles change everything

In 2v2, everyone's Elo moves according to the average of their team and of the one across the net: a pair beating a stronger pair pays both of its players.

  • 03

No more arguing about the serve

The draw happens in the app, before the first point. Nobody starts believing their turn was taken from them.

The maths

The same calculation, one setting per sport.

The factor that sets how wide the swings are does not depend on the sport, but on your experience: it is generous while you have few games on the clock, which lets the ranking find your level quickly, and then it settles down. What does depend on the sport is how uneven team sizes are handled.

K = 32 under 30 games played, then K = 16. That factor is the same in every sport.

How Elo works

Team-size handicap

150

When team sizes are uneven, the short-handed side faces an opponent counted 150 Elo points stronger for every missing player. Holding your own one against two therefore pays more.

The questions

What people ask us about table tennis.

Can we play games to 21?

Yes. Eleven is only a default: the room sets the points per game, and all of its matches follow that setting.

Do doubles count towards the same ranking?

Yes. Singles and doubles both feed the table tennis ranking. In doubles your side counts as the average of the two players, and the result is then applied to each of them.

Who serves first?

The app draws it before the first point and shows it to the whole room. It is the one setting table tennis has on top of the other sports.

The other sports

One account, three rankings.

  • Table football

The king of the coffee break. Play it 1v1 or 2v2, and switch on the bonus-point rules if your room counts them.

    • 1v1 · 2v2
    • first to 10

A mid-field goal is worth 2, a three-bar one 3, when the room says so.

  • Pool

Turn by turn, on a table that follows the game ball by ball. 8-ball, 9-ball or blackball, picked before you break.

    • turn by turn
    • 3 variants

Every potted ball is logged during the game, not after it.
